Children will take iPads out in the environment and take pictures of different shapes. I will then use the pictures for a follow up activity for them to identify other objects that are the same shape of what they took a picture of. The children will be in small groups and will be assigned a shape that they will have to look for. I will then print the picture and glue it on a piece of paper. If they took a picture of a rock, I would write down, what else is the shape of a circle.
Objectives
** Standards:
Opportunities to make models, draw, name and /or classify common shapes and verbally describe them.
Activities which lead to investigations and predictions from the results of combining, subdividing, and changing shapes.
Opportunities to recognize and appreciate geometric shapes in both the indoor and outdoor environments.
Time in the natural environment to identify the shapes and symmetry of natural elements (leaves, branches, petals).
What 21st Century Skill Objectives does this activity/Lesson include
communication- The children are talking about what shapes they are recognizing outside. They will share what they found with the other group.
collaboration- The children are working in small groups to find objects that look like the shape they are looking for.
Problem solving- Children agree or disagree in the group if they will take a picture of the object. A child might say, Yes that is the shape of a square.
critical thinking
decision making- After I print the pictures, The children will put a thumbs up if they agree that the object they took reflects the shape that they had to find.
reflection- We will sit down as a group and go over how we found the shapes and if the children enjoyed the lesson.
Tasks:
The main steps of the activity are:
1. I will assign groups and each group will have an assigned shape and iPad.
2. We will go outside and each group will take turns with the iPad and will collaborate on which objects resemble the shape they are assigned and will take a picture of it.
3. The next day, I will have a group discussion on if the shapes resemble the pictures that were taken. I will have a picture of the shape and all the pictures of what was taken outside and we will match the picture under the shape.
4. I will extend the lesson by having the children draw a picture of another object that resembles a shape and I will take their dictation.
Personalization/Differentiation
How will you incorporate "student choice" into this project/lesson?
I believe that this is a very open ended lesson and the children who can be challenged will take more pictures of shapes and will be able to recognize more patterns in the environment. Also, a child who may not speak english will have the opportunity to use technology to express themselves and all show their understanding through pictures.
Real-World Connection
What is the real world application for this project/lesson? Why is this work important? relevant?
In Early childhood we are always trying to use the environment in our teaching. The children learn best when they are working in the natural environment rather than being taught through rote learning.
Who is the audience for this project/lesson?
The audience is for preschool children.
How will you connect adults (experts, authors, professionals, etc.) from outside of school to the lesson/project?
One way to connect adults is to make a book out of the pictures they took and also by taking their dictation and drawing of what else ids that shape.
How will the work be displayed publicly?
This will be made into a book and displayed in the classroom.
Assessment:
How will you assess the students learning?
I will assess the children by taking anecdotal notes on their responses.
How do you know students can "transfer" the learning to new situations? Will there be an opportunity for constructive "peer" feedback?
The children will continue to recognize shapes in their natural environment and transfer their learning to their daily routines. I think that their will be time for constructive perl feedback in different parts of the day. For example, during circle time or during snack. the day always has an opportunity for learning and feedback.
